Thursday of the Second Week of Easter. The reading is from Gospel of John 3:31-36

Jesus Christ Pantocrator by Svitozar Nenyuk, 2006.

The One from Heaven – John 3:31-36

The one who comes from above is above all. The one who is of the earth is earthly and speaks of earthly things. But the one who comes from heaven [is above all].

He testifies to what he has seen and heard, but no one accepts his testimony. Whoever does accept his testimony certifies that God is trustworthy.

For the one whom God sent speaks the words of God. He does not ration his gift of the Spirit.

The Father loves the Son and has given everything over to him.

Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever disobeys the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God remains upon him.

The words in the above reading are reflections on the two preceding scenes. .It is uncertain whether these were uttered by John the Baptist, Jesus, or the evangelist.

There are similar verses in the gospels reflecting what is said in today’s passage.

The one who comes from above is above all. The one who is of the earth is earthly and speaks of earthly things. But the one who comes from heaven [is above all] (John 3:31)

He said to them, “You belong to what is below, I belong to what is above. You belong to this world, but I do not belong to this world. (John 8:23)

He testifies to what he has seen and heard, but no one accepts his testimony. (John 3:32)

Jesus answered and said to him, “You are the teacher of Israel and you do not understand this? (John 3:11)

“Whoever does accept his testimony certifies that God is trustworthy. For the one whom God sent speaks the words of God. He does not ration his gift of the Spirit. (John 3:33-34)

I have much to say about you in condemnation. But the one who sent me is true, and what I heard from him I tell the world.” (John 8:26)

Jesus cried out and said, “Whoever believes in me believes not only in me but also in the one who sent me, and whoever sees me sees the one who sent me.

I came into the world as light, so that everyone who believes in me might not remain in darkness.

And if anyone hears my words and does not observe them, I do not condemn him, for I did not come to condemn the world but to save the world.

Whoever rejects me and does not accept my words has something to judge him: the word that I spoke, it will condemn him on the last day, because I did not speak on my own, but the Father who sent me commanded me what to say and speak.

And I know that his commandment is eternal life. So what I say, I say as the Father told me.” (John12:44–50)

“Whoever believes in the Son of God has this testimony within himself. Whoever does not believe God has made him a liar by not believing the testimony God has given about his Son. (1 John 5:10)

The Father loves the Son and has given everything over to him. (John 3:35)

fully aware that the Father had put everything into his power and that he had come from God and was returning to God, (John 13:3)

All things have been handed over to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son wishes to reveal him. (Matthew 11:27)

Then Jesus approached and said to them, “All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. (Matthew 28:18)

All things have been handed over to me by my Father. No one knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son and anyone to whom the Son wishes to reveal him.” (Luke 10:22)

Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever disobeys the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God remains upon him. “(John 3:36)

For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life. (John 3:16)

“I write these things to you so that you may know that you have eternal life, you who believe in the name of the Son of God. (1 John 5:13)
